The ETUC believes that the issue of sustainable development and environmental protectionare equally as important as social and economic issues in policy-making. These are not conflicting demands but complementary elements. In the present economic context, shifting towards a green economy with decent job creation is an essential and also effective response to the economic and financial crisis. It is important to address the social dimension in the process of shifting towards a more sustainable economy. For the ETUC, Europe needs to increase its ambitions and climate protection goals in concert with a Sustainable New Deal. The ETUC pursues corporate responsibility and social dialogue on sustainable development issues within the EU.
Given the global dimension of problems like climate change and poverty, the ETUC also works with international actors to press for the setting up of a global regulation framework enabling a ‘just transition’ towards a low carbon and resource efficient economy.
