European Social Forum: Trade Unions call for jobs, growth and fundamental rights

Bruxelles, 02/07/2010

The ETUC and its Turkish member organisations today organised a conference on the crisis and workers' rights in Europe. The trade unions used this opportunity to reaffirm the importance of defending quality jobs, combating informal work and respecting trade union rights and fundamental rights.

ETUC Deputy General Secretary Joël Decaillon commented: "It is unacceptable to make workers pay for the crisis and on top of that to ask them to tighten their belts even further by imposing austerity measures that will lead us straight into recession. Priority must be focused on employment and growth, and not on budget discipline, the tendency that is emerging today. {{That is the message we will seek to make heard at the European Day of Action on 29 September."
