The British Trades Union Congress’s ‘Roots, Culture, Identity’ project, launched 10 years ago, offers a platform for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BME) artists to express their ideas about life in the UK.
For the first time since the covid pandemic, this year’s exhibition (#TUCRootsCultureIdentity23) takes place in person as well as online. It also commemorates the 30th anniversary of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence, the black teenager whose death threw the spotlight on racism in British institutions. The exhibition was established in his memory and also marks 75 years since the arrival of the Empire Windrush, the ship that brought the first of thousands of workers from the Caribbean to rebuild the post-war British economy – the so-called ‘Windrush generation’.
