The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) welcomes the broad support of the European Parliament on the revision of Working Time Directive

Brussels, 12/02/2004

The ETUC welcomes the fact that the European Parliament decided to call on the European Commission to revise the Working Time Directive to better protect workers against the health and safety hazards brought on by working hours.

John Monks, General Secretary of the ETUC, declared “it's a very useful decision. The European Parliament has given a notice that the opt-out is not a solution for problems linked to on-call works in the health sector and that it should quickly disappear. The Commission is asked now to better assess the real needs and come up with adequate proposals for a long term and lasting response and should include the social partners in that process”.
