“The European Trade Union movement is shocked by the proposal to put up a wall between Hungary and Serbia” said Bernadette Ségol, Secretary General of the European Trade Union Confederation. “After playing such a prominent role in the fall of the iron curtain it is hard to believe that just over 25 years later Hungary would want to build a new iron curtain.”
With over 2,000 kilometres of border with 7 countries, Hungary’s proposed 175 km wall between it and one other country will be a very unpleasant political message rather than an effective barrier for keeping people out.
“The wall, and the announced closure of the border with Serbia is a provocation and a pathetic attempt to appease far-right forces within Hungary” added Bernadette Ségol. “I call on all decent Hungarians, and on the EU, to stop the Hungarian Government from building this ill-conceived wall.”
