Speaking at the Brussels Tax Forum organised by the European Commission (Directorate General TAXUD), John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) said: “Arranging corporate tax is a profitable business and can lead to play a system against the other”. And he asked: “can there be some EU wide agreement on corporate tax levels at least? Can monetary union be complemented by a degree at least of economic union so that ‘beggar thy neighbour’ policies do not always prevail. And would it be totally impossible to try to get a greater increase of agreement in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), or in bilateral with the USA and others, on the taxation of corporate income?”.
