More than 2 million public sector workers are due to get a pay rise of 4.75% over two years, thanks to a collective agreement between Ver.di and federal and local governments.
The increase will be paid in two stages, with a first 2.4% in March 2016 to be followed by another 2.35% in February 2017. The deal came at the end of three rounds of talks between employers and the union, which had initially demanded a 6% pay rise. Ver.di welcomed the result as “a compromise that clearly increases salaries, boosts purchasing power and helps make the public sector more attractive” to workers.
